The West Kootenay Women's Association (WKWA) Archive. 15 boxes of material including the organisational records of the Women's Centre. These includes reports, meeting minutes, newsletters, by-laws and policies and WKWA program materials. There are also WKWA events ephemera and photographs. The archives copies of all issues of the 'Images' magazine produced by the WKWA from 1974-91 and corespondance regarding the publication. There is also a large amount of documentary material that relate to topics and issues relevant to Women's Centre activities. These include social, economic and political rights issues such as Feminism, motherhood, women's labour, povery and women, lesbians and violence, women's liberation. |

The Nelson's Women's Centre began in 1972 and opened its doors at the Peterson Building at 490 Ward Street in 1973 and the first of more than 25 years of women's festivals is held in Nelson the following year. The non-profit West Kootenay Women's Association (WKWA) was incorporated in 1974. In 1977 the Women's Centre becomes the main project of the WKWA and moves to new offices in the Old Jam Factory the following year. In the 1980s many rallies are held in Nelson regarding pornography, abortion rights, sexual abuse and harrassment. In 1990 The Women's Centre losses government funding. In 1994-5 the Women's Centre finds a permanent home at 420 Mill Street. The Women's Centre is later dedicated as the Jean Mackenzie House. Throughout the 80s, 90s and early 2000s countless groups of survivors of violence run by the Centre. In 2009 a Kootenay Feminism website is launched. In 2011 a Gender Pay Project theatre starts, providing space and engagement with 'greater dynamics of today'. |
