Private Alexander "Alec" Frank Berry 63144 Born September 3rd, 1896 in Dulwick, London, England. Lived in Granite Siding; worked as a miner for the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, in Trail. Religion was Church of England. Enlisted on November 20th, 1914 and left Nelson with the 2nd Contingent. Left Canada on February 23rd, 1915 and was promoted to corporal on March 30th. Arrived in France on May 1st and served with the 14th Battalion. Fought in battles of Festubert, Givenchy, and Ypres. Promoted to rank of Lance Corporal circa June. Served with the 23rd Reserve Battalion. Received wound to his right knee from shrapnel on June 3rd, 1916, while fighting at Hill 60 and Mount Sorrel in Belgium. Transferred to multiple hospitals. Wounds finally healed after turning septic, but he continued to have problems fully extending that leg. Chronic slight ankylosis. He was invalided to Canada on December 16th, 1916. Continued treatment in Canada. Discharged October 15th, 1917 in Esquimalt, BC by reason of being medically unfit. Known family: Father - Arthur W. Berry. |
