Corporal William (Billy) Bowyer 23367 Born November 12, 1879 in Wokingham, England. Had previous military experience serving one year with the Royal Berkshire Militia. Came to Canada before 1901. Was a fruit rancher, and farmed with his family at Sproule Creek, above Taghum. Religion was Church of England. Left Nelson with the first contingent in August 1914. Enlisted on September 18th at Valcartier. Served with the 12th Battalion, and then with the 7th Battalion. Promoted to Corporal in the transport section, February 1915. Died from wounds received at St. Julien, Ypres, on July 23rd, 1915; 35 years old. Buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France. Known family: Parents - John and Mary Bowyer; siblings (in order of age) - Helen (Nellie) Bowyer, (William was second oldest), Edith Violet Bowyer, Mary Bowyer, Kate Bowyer, Alice Bowyer, Harry Bowyer, Amy Bowyer, and Richard Bowyer (enlisted in July, 1917). After John Bowyer died in Nelson in March 1915, and William's death in July, Mary Bowyer returned to England, taking with her Edith, Mary, Kate, and Alice. |
