Major Gilbert Anderson Born January 16th, 1868 in Caermarthen, Wales. Had previous military experience serving 2 years with the South Lancashire Regiment. Came to Canada in 1885. Lived in Millerville, Alberta. Volunteered to fight in South Africa during the Boer War; served with Strathcona's Horse. Contracted malaria while in South Africa; suffered through recurring attacks for the rest of his life. Returned to Alberta and married Ellen Mary (family name unknown) in 1903. Moved to Nelson in 1904 while he was working with the C.P.R. freight office and the Dominion Express Company. Lived in Nelson as a fruit rancher with his wife. Religion was Church of England. He was also a member of the Legion of Frontiersmen and the Nelson Rifle Association; one of the crack shots of the district. Anderson was captain of the Nelson detachment of the 54th in May 1915. He enlisted with the 54th Battalion at Vernon Camp on June 17th. Commissioned to rank of Major on that same day. Left Canada on November 22nd, and arrived in England on December 1st. Suffered from nasal polypi in February and March, 1916. Polypi removed. Arrived in France in August 1916. Wounded on November 18th; gunshot wound to right thigh. Suffered from physical complications; difficulty walking, sitting down, and climbing a hill. He was also diagnosed with shell chock and neurasthenia. Suffered from influenza in January, 1917. Transferred to the 16th Reserve Battalion, February 1917. He returned to Canada on leave from June to September, 1917. Was commandant of the internment camp at Morissey, BC. Re-appointed Major in the 11th Battalion, May 1918. Demobilized on April 14th, 1919. After the war, he was the superintendent of the Dominion and provincial employment agency in Nelson. Closely identified with the Masonic Order; active participant in the local lodge and chapter. Was a fisherman, and enjoyed music. Died on May 28th, 1928 in Nelson; 60 years old.
